South Eastern NSW is home to many diverse communities, including people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and questioning, plus other non-heterosexual and gender fluid identities (LGBTIQ+, sometimes written as LGBTI or LGBTIQA+ to include asexual people). While data is not consistently captured for this group, it is estimated that up to 11 in 100 Australians have a diverse sexual orientation, gender identity, and / or sex variation .
LGBTIQ+ communities have specific health needs and often find it difficult to access safe and inclusive health services; particularly in regional and rural areas. This is because LGBTIQ+ people face significant levels of stigma and discrimination in their everyday lives, including from within the health sector.
