Free new adult Mental Health Hubs making a difference in South Eastern NSW

14 March 2025

People living in South Eastern NSW can now access a new, free mental health service for adults who are experiencing moderate psychological distress, with locations in Wollongong, Shoalhaven, Goulburn, Bega and Queanbeyan.

According to Prudence Buist, CEO of COORDINARE, the five Mental Health Hubs were opened last year and are dedicated to offering person-centred support in a safe and welcoming environment.

“This service is free, and no appointment or referral is needed walk-ins are welcome to help connect you with the best service for your needs, or you can call the Hubs directly. These Hubs will improve access to and awareness of mental health care, especially for people who haven’t accessed mental health support before,” said Prue.

One of our Hubs recently had a client who was struggling with mental health issues, including suicidal ideation and homelessness. With support from a team of clinicians and peer workers, the individual and their family received a combination of psychological therapy, peer support, and practical case management.

Over the course of three months, the client was able to secure stable housing, and their psychological distress was reported as being significantly reduced. This positive outcome reflects the Hub’s ability to offer flexible and collaborative support, resulting in improved mental health and a better quality of life,” she added.

Another client at a Hub had been grappling with psychosis and suicidal ideation. Initially skeptical of seeking help due to past negative experiences, the client found a non-judgmental, supportive environment, which allowed them to open-up about their struggles for the first time.

There are five Mental Health Hubs, and two Medicare Mental Health Centres opened in South Eastern NSW, funded by the Australian Government and commissioned by COORDINARE.

These stories demonstrate the life-changing impact that Mental Health Hubs are having across the region. By offering accessible, flexible, and person-centered support, the Hubs empower individuals to take control of their mental health journeys and work towards healing and resilience,” said Prue.

“We encourage anyone experiencing mental health issues to reach out and seek help as there is a range of support options available,” she added.
